AbbVie Canada employees are Parkinson Ready

Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disease in the world – by 2050, an estimated 25 million people will be living with it.1 As part of our commitment to making a difference for people living with Parkinson’s disease, AbbVie hosted an immersive training session for its employees on April 16, 2025. The Parkinson Ready training aims to provide a better understanding the disease symptoms and how we can all support and engage with people living with Parkinson’s in the workplace and in public spaces.

To help address the challenges faced by people living with Parkinson’s, the World Parkinson Coalition designed the Parkinson Ready program, working closely with local partners such as Parkinson Society BC and the PD Avengers, to ensure the training is culturally appropriate and tailored to each community.

Led by Shelly Yu, and Larry Gifford, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, the program is designed as an open conversation about the lived experience. The goal is to demystify the disease, reduce stigma, and create more inclusive communities.

As Larry Gifford, co-founder of PD Avengers, explains, “This is an opportunity to speak to people to show them how Parkinson’s impacts daily life and give them tools to respond with empathy.”

Whether it’s learning to recognize symptoms — which can vary from day to day — or making simple adjustments to a space or service, everyone can play a role in making a difference.

Shelly Yu, neurophysiotherapist and Education & Support Services Coordinator at Parkinson Society British Columbia, reminds us: “Even if you don’t know someone living with Parkinson’s today, chances are you will at some point in your life.”

While the training was initially developed for frontline workers — in sectors like transportation, hospitality, and emergency services — it is truly relevant for everyone. Building an inclusive and Parkinson-friendly society is a collective responsibility.

AbbVie employees expressed their gratitude for the experience, highlighting the valuable insights gained — both professionally and personally. One employee shared, “What I learned today that I didn’t know before is that Parkinson’s symptoms can change rapidly — even from one minute to the next — and how important it is to respond with patience and understanding.”

Together, we can help to create more compassionate, respectful, and safe communities for people living with Parkinson’s. For more information about the Parkinson Ready program, visit https://www.worldpdcoalition.org/page/ParkinsonsReady.

The session was made available to AbbVie employees across Canada, both live and as a recorded version, to ensure broader accessibility and impact.
